Juneteenth/NAACP Gathering Avery Park Corvallis June 9th Saturday June 9th an event happened down at Avery park that not only symbolized community but us coming together as a people to eliminate raced based discrimination. Now I see the title of this article maybe a tad confusing, your not reading that wrong. the NAACP and Juneteenth were happening in the same place at the same time. What is Juneteenth you might be wondering, according to Juneteenth's website sheds light on this as "Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free." Angel Harris, Corvallis June 9th Angel Harris, was the comity chair for 2018, for the 4th annual gathering the biggest issue for Mrs. Harris is that the number of people who don'
