Juneteenth/NAACP (final)

Juneteenth/NAACP Gathering Avery Park Corvallis June 9th

Saturday June 9th an event happened down at Avery park that not only symbolized community but us coming together as a people to eliminate raced based discrimination. Now I see the title of this article maybe a tad confusing, your not reading that wrong. the NAACP and Juneteenth were happening in the same place at the same time. What is Juneteenth you might be wondering, according to Juneteenth's website sheds light on this as "Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free."
Angel Harris, Corvallis June 9th

Angel Harris, was the comity chair for 2018, for the 4th annual gathering the biggest issue for Mrs. Harris is that the number of people who don't know what the event is about. This reporter would like to assist you in this endeavor, so lets get the word out! So far the best thing that has happened is the volunteers are prevalent and plentiful from what this reporter has heard.

Angel Harris and Barry Jerkins, Corvallis June 9th

Barry Jerkins, Corvallis June 9th

Barry Jerkins, was the pervious president In 2016 and served his term(s) by gathering a comity of eight people to set up competent leadership, getting people to be committed is and was the biggest challenge for Mr. Jerkins. The more easy challenges such as speaking to O.S.U students, an open mind is more acceptant of newly found awareness(s). Mr. Jerkins has also helped in founding the Corvallis branch of the (AOW.SAC.NAACP) and was mentored by Dr. Cal Henery PhD whom founded the Eugene, Corvallis, and Portland branches as well as a few more that this reporter could not catch.

This reporter had a great time getting to see and meet new people as well as expanding ones own mind and awareness, prior to coming to this event this reporter had no idea what Juneteenth was. The best part was seeing an officer of the law dancing with a five year old for a brief few moments.
